ESP Mind Set |

From James Biss:
"Since writing Messing With Minds, I've taken a great deal of pleasure playing with ESP card effects. While I respect the thinking of some mentalists who believe that such symbols are not ideal for many audiences, there is something magically visual about them that transcends the simplicity of the rest of our mentalism props. At the same time, they lack the common commercialism of crass playing cards. For me there's also something endearing about the tragically heroic story of J.B. Rhine as well. More about that in a moment...
"There have been some truly delightful products released over the years for close-up use in particular. Among my favorites are such works as "Dream of the Hermit" and "Zenner-Tech." Because most of my own performances are on stage, few of these particular effects have migrated into my own shows however.
"Over the past few years I've developed some alternative effects instead that have proven ESPecially satisfying. Each uses large Jumbo ESP cards. Although they can be constructed out of cardboard with a good printer and then laminated, my Oompa Loompas at Magication use a particularly versatile vinyl material that you'll find very pleasant to work with. They look professional and can be seen in any sized venue."
ZENERBOCKER:
"Without question, my mentalism effect called KNICKERBOCKER from MESSING WITH MINDS has been my most reviewed and duplicated creation. This is a Pseudo-psychometry idea applied to that most personal of secrets ... the color of people's underwear! I continue to receive correspondence from performers all over the world who have evolved it to suit their individual style and situation. It's simple to set up and perform yet provides tremendous scope for interaction and humor with the audience - and I've found it to be a huge hit with all of the audiences I've personally shared it with. In recent years I've developed and performed a more thought provoking variation of this presentation with the five symbol cards and four or five spectators in what I like to call ZENERBOCKER. It's closely connected with the original KNICKERBOCKER idea in some ways and I think it makes a lovely conclusion or introduction to a design duplication set in a show."
